Chapter 1 : Mentally
This chapter is almost like a preview to the hardships that Bigger faces. In this chapter Bigger has to kill a rat in his home with his bare hands. He's little sister is favored by his mother so Bigger is seen as the problem child. I think this shows how family in rural, underprivelaged neighborhoods live. Since they have no father, Bigger is seen as the man of the family.
- The meaning of this chapter is to teach someone the price of living in a rundown apartment. Also, it shows that homes without a father, the son will be the man of the family and expected to support the family.

Pages 13-40
Chapter 2 : Friend or Foe
This chapter gives us modern day experiences that you face when having friends. One of Bigger's friends is trying to talk the gang into robbing someone. Bigger doesn't really want to do it but he feels like he has to because his friend pulls out a knife. Bigger is being peer pressured.
- This chapter shows what young people would do to get what they want. It also shows how gangs in neighborhoods deal with being denied.

Pages 40-44
Chapter 3 : Son of A Fucking Bitch!
Bigger and Gus get into a physical altercation, but it is broken up by Doc and their friends. After leaving, he runs into a white man that offers to give him a job.
- The meaning of this chapter is to teach how businesses deal with physical fights in their stores. It also shows that Caucasians will offer a job to an African American.

Pages 44-62
Chapter 4 : Yessuh
The chapter starts off with the interview between Bigger and the white man. It is amazing how Bigger treats the white man. He treats him with respect and honor, as if to worship the white man. Why doesn't he treat his own people this way?
- This chapter shows that African Americans were somewhat afriad or showed superior power to Caucasians. They treated Caucasians like they were better then their own people.

Chapter 5 : Show - Ferr
This chapter is the end of the interview. Bigger gets the job and chauffeurs Jan around. He thinks it is awkward to be so close to a white woman in a car and to do everything she says but he still treats her with the upmost respect.
- The meaning of this chapter is to show the difference in the way an African American treats his own people and the Caucasian.
